National Problem Gambling Awareness Week: Know the Code
Posted 9 March 2010
National Problem Gambling Awareness Week is being observed March 7 through March 13. The event is an opportunity to remind Iowans to use safe and responsible gambling practices and be aware of the laws applying to gambling in our state. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is teaming with the Iowa Lottery to remind retail employees who sell Iowa Lottery products to “Know the Code.” Under Iowa law, lottery products cannot be purchased by anyone who is younger than the age of 21.

During the first week of March, lottery sales representatives delivered to all Iowa Lottery retail locations a letter and flyer that were developed in conjunction with the IDPH Office of Gambling Treatment and Prevention and organizations that provide problem gambling treatment and education services. The materials ask retailers to check photo IDs for any lottery customers they think are younger than 30 to ensure they are complying with state law.

“Iowa Lottery retailers have a strong record of adherence to the law in the sale of age-controlled products such as tobacco, alcohol and lottery tickets,” Lottery CEO Terry Rich said. “At the lottery, we’ve offered fun and entertainment since 1985 and are committed to helping our players participate responsibly.”

During National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, the IDPH Office of Gambling Treatment and Prevention also is continuing its focus on the larger issue of prevention of youth problem gambling. The 2008 Iowa Youth Survey found that 3 percent of 6th, 8th and 11th grade boys have won or lost more than $100 in a single day on some form of gambling during the past year. This is an indicator of the presence of a gambling problem.

“Gambling problems are concerning at any age,” said IDPH Gambling Treatment Program Coordinator Mark Vander Linden. “However, problem gambling in youth has been linked with increased risk of substance and tobacco use, school and family problems, and even suicide.”

For most people, gambling is recreational. For some, however, gambling can lead to debilitating problems for the gambler, his or her family, place of employment and community. It is possible to gamble responsibly:

    * Don’t think of gambling as a way to make money.
    * Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
    * Set a money and time limit whenever you gamble.
    * Never chase losses.
    * Don’t gamble when you are depressed or upset.
