New
Youth Gardening Club To Form
Posted 23 February
2010
A new gardening club is forming for youth in Delaware
County! Delaware County ISU Extension, in partnership with
Manchester’s Good To Great Youth Activities Committee and the City of
Manchester Parks & Recreation Department are teaming up to offer
the new opportunity for area kids.
The club will meet for the first time on Thursday, March 4, beginning
at 6:30 p.m. at Sue’s Flower and Garden Center in Manchester.
Youth attending will get a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the local
greenhouse and perhaps participate in a hands-on activity. Be sure to
dress to get dirty! The club plans to meet monthly with a focus on
individual and group service projects. Organizers are working
closely with the Delaware County Master Gardeners and have already
identified some projects for the group.
The new gardening club is open to all area youth, ages nine (9) through
eighteen (18), who are at least in fourth grade this year. The
club is open to youth from throughout Delaware County.
The creation of the local gardening club is in direct response to local
interest from young people in the area.
A 2009 Manchester Good to Great Youth Committee Survey of West Delaware
High School students (grades 9-12), conducted last fall, indicated that
11 individuals were interested in joining a gardening club. At
the middle school level (grades 5-8), 12 students were interested in
horticulture activities. Organizers are confident that there are
other youth in surrounding school districts also interested in
participating in these fun activities and the formation of such a
club.
Master Gardener Al Remling and Master Gardener Interns Bob Wendt and
Lori Scovel are assisting with the new club. Additional volunteers are
still being sought. If interested, please contact Scovel at the
Delaware County ISU Extension office at 563-927-4201. More
information about how to volunteer will also be available at the first
club meeting.
Pre-registration for the new garden club is requested but not
required. For more information about the gardening club or other
new youth programs being offered this spring throughout Delaware
County, please contact Lori Scovel at the Delaware County ISU Extension
office at 563-927-4201or e-mail her at lscovel@iastate.edu today!
