Dubuque
Honored
for "Deal of the Year"
Posted 18 February
2010
Business Facilities magazine has included the IBM-Dubuque Global
Technology Services Delivery Center project in their 2009 Economic
Development Deal of the Year Awards.
In selecting “IBM Searches the World and Finds Dubuque, Iowa,” the
projected direct, indirect, and induced economic impact for output,
employment, and income was heavily considered by a panel of expert,
independent judges, along with a subjective analysis of the overall
economic development efforts. This analysis takes into consideration
the likely impact the project will have
upon the local community, the unique challenges the project presented,
and the originality and extraordinary nature of the methods and efforts
used by the economic development organization to secure the deal.
The IBM delivery center project is expected to generate $189 million in
direct economic impact and more than $70 million in direct personal
income. A portion of these economic impacts can be credited to the
extensive restoration of the historic Roshek Building in downtown
Dubuque, which houses the IBM Global Technology Services Delivery
Center.
The 2009 Business Facilities’ Economic Development Deal of the Year
Award comes just months after Dubuque was awarded the 2009 Excellence
in Economic Development Award for Excellence in Historic
Preservation-led Strategies by the U.S. Department of Commerce for its
commitment to research-based, market driven economic development in
helping grow the local economy. “The city of Dubuque represents the
best and brightest in 21st century economic development,” U.S. Commerce
Secretary Gary Locke said. “Excellence Award winners exemplify the
importance of supporting regional strategies to ensure American
communities succeed in the global marketplace and create higher-skill,
higher-wage jobs.”
