Second-Annual
Darwin Week to be Held at UNI
Posted 3 February
2010
The second-annual Darwin Week, scheduled in conjunction with the 201st
birthday of Charles Darwin, will be held on the University of Northern
Iowa campus Feb. 8-12. The presentations and activities will be held in
UNI's Maucker Union and are free and open to the public.
"Darwin Week will feature talks about the newest ideas in science by
UNI faculty and special guests Ed Wasserman of the University of Iowa
and PZ Myers of the University of Minnesota," said Quinn Jones of UNI
Freethinkers and Inquirers (UNIFI), which is hosting and organizing the
event at UNI.
Wasserman will speak on "Unhinging Darwin" at 4 p.m., Monday, Feb. 8
and Meyers will speak about evolution at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10.
Topics presented by UNI faculty members include robotics, astronomy,
global warming and much more, according to Jones. A discussion forum on
evolution and religion will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the
Maucker Union.
"With this celebration of Darwin's birth, we hope to raise awareness of
his work and how it has influenced science, religion and society in
general," said David Whitsett, UNIFI's adviser.
UNIFI is a campus student organization affiliated with the Center for
Inquiry, a transnational organization that encourages evidence-based
inquiry into science, pseudoscience, medicine and health, religion,
ethics, secularism and society.
UNI supporters of Darwin Week are Northern Iowa Student Government,
Philosophy Students Club, Pre-Law Club, Swim Club, the Student Nature
Society and the Psychology Club. Contributions also were made by the
Iowa Secularists, Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers, the American Humanist
Association and the Center for Inquiry.
