County
Raises Mileage Reimbursement for Employees
Posted 3 July 2008
The Delaware County Board of Supervisors earlier this week discussed
the costs of travel for employees to attend required meetings.
Supervisor Bill Skinner addressed the subject of the new IRS Allowable
Mileage Rate of 58.5 cents per mile. He feels this is a
significant increase for the county. Currently the county reimburses
50.5 cents per mile for travel conducted by private vehicle.
“I feel we need to take a hard look at what else we can do, as a
county, to offset this increase," Skinner said. "Most county
offices have regular schools of instruction and meetings they are
required to attend. Perhaps we need to purchase a county vehicle
for those offices that don’t have one available. With a vehicle
that gets 25 miles per gallon, it would cost 16 cents per mile for
gas,” he stated.
Skinner continued to explain that it is a lot less paperwork for
employees and payroll staff if the county uses the allowable IRS
rate. "If we reimburse less, the employee can deduct the
difference at the end of the year. If we allow more, it would be
considered taxable income and needs to be tracked," he said.
Skinner explained this is why Delaware County has already adopted a
policy that states mileage is to be reimbursed at the allowable IRS
rate.
Supervisor Shirley Helmrichs indicated she thinks the departments that
currently do not have access to a county vehicle are being very
responsible with their time and not attending "frivolous"
meetings. She and Skinner both agreed this issue should be
addressed again at a later date to discuss alternatives.
Following the discussion, members of the board did approve a motion to
increase the county's mileage reimbursement from 50.5 to 58.5 cents per
mile with the stipulation that the board will address the issue of
travel alternatives in the near future.
