Celebrate
July 4 in Indee
Posted 22 June 2008
Organizers behind the annual July 4th celebration in Independence say
the event will be held as planned downtown and in Riverwalk Parks.
With other Cedar Valley July 4 events now cancelled due to the
extreme flooding, local committee members are anticipating an
extra-large crowd for this year's events.
The celebration begins Thursday, July 3, with free pork burgers at
Riverwalk Parks with a non-perishable food donation, the Pig Out
Challenge and the World Championship pork burger eating contests. There
will also be live music starting at 5 p.m. in downtown Independence.
On Friday, the 148th-annual July 4th parade starts at 9 a.m., followed
by fun in the park, including the reading of the Declaration of
Independence, the Budweiser Coed Sand-Shootout Volleyball Tournament,
the FunZone, a variety of live music and the ever-so-grand fireworks at
10 p.m.
On Saturday, the Farmer's Market begins at 8 a.m. at the Mill. At 10
a.m. begins the Indee Firecracker Open Golf Tournament and that evening
will be IMCA Races at Independence Motor Speedway.
On Sunday, July 6, the Chamber of Commerce Ambassador's Ham &
Cheese Breakfast will be at the Mill from 8 a.m. to noon. An ecumenical
church service will take place at Veteran's Park at 9:30 a.m. That
evening, there will be a Friends of the Library Patriotic Movie at
Riverwalk Parks at 8:30 p.m.
